The New Theme
Following
Changing
(2024),
Dialogues
(2025), and
Metamorphosis
(2026),
MIA Photo Fair BNP Paribas continues its curatorial journey by confronting one of the most pressing questions of our time:
what does it mean to belong?
The theme of the sixteenth edition of the fair,
Belonging
, invites us to reflect on how bonds are forged between individuals, communities, and places, using photography to explore the manifold ways of being part of a world in constant transformation.
«
With Belonging, we have chosen a concept that cuts across many of the defining transformations of our time. Photography is uniquely suited to capturing how sense of belonging is forged, whether to people, places, and communities, or to ideas and memories. This theme will serve as the narrative thread for an edition that approaches photography not just as a medium of representation, but as a vital space for connection
,» states
Francesca Malgara
, Artistic Director.
The Sections
The Main Section the leading Italian and international galleries dedicated to photography and contemporary visual culture.
Beyond Photography — Dialogue | Work in progress
Curated by Rischa Paterlini , the section serves as a dedicated platform for contemporary artistic research. While photography remains its foundational anchor and core focus, the project intentionally opens up to hybrid practices and experimental methodologies. Installations, video, archival materials, and cutting-edge digital media engage in a dynamic dialogue with the photographic medium. This expands its traditional boundaries, unlocking new ways to explore concepts of identity, memory, landscape, and belonging, the latter being framed as a fluid, ever-evolving condition.
Reportage Beyond Reportage
The section continues its trajectory under the curatorship of Emanuela Mazzonis di Pralafera as a dedicated space for the evolution of contemporary documentary language. Featuring photographers from diverse generations and backgrounds, the section highlights practices that transcend traditional reportage, moving toward more interpretive and complex forms of storytelling capable of offering a critical reading of reality.
