First edition of the
JEU DE PAUME PHOTOGRAPHY PRIZES
Two new prizes for contemporary photography
On November 13th 2006, the French Ministry of Culture and Communication in partnership with the Jeu de paume will award two new prizes to artists working in the field of photography:
- a jury Prize awarded by professionals in the field of visual arts;
- for the first time, a Prize awarded by the public who vote for the laureate of their choice.
In creating these prizes, the French Ministry of Culture and Communication wishes to promote the extreme vitality and diversity of contemporary photographic practices, without restriction.
Open to French artists and artists living in France who have not yet had a personal exhibition in a national institution, the prizes to be attributed will include an exhibition at the Jeu de paume site Sully (April 24th to 3rd June 2007), the publication of a catalogue by the Jeu de paume and a grant of 10,000 Euros for each laureate.
The responsibility of discovering promising artists was given to a committee of experts who was asked to select photographers among the propositions made by fifteen professionals representing various disciplines: artists, art collectors, officials of cultural institutions, art critics, etc.
From October 2nd until October 22nd, an important media campaign (among others television and print) will allow the general public to discover the work of the nominees and choose their laureate by voting on the Jeu de paume's web site www.jeudepaume.org where the complete portfolios of the artists are presented. During this period, voting can also take place at the Jeu de paume where the work of the candidates is displayed.
At the beginning of November, the jury Prize will be assigned in Paris.
