A Photo Rarely Comes Alone
Pairs, Cycles, and Series from the Collection of Photography of the Kunstbibliothek

Exhibition: 12 February – 5 June 2016
Opening: 11 February, 7pm

Whether in duos or threesomes or in multipart series, photographs are often joined together to form larger works that are more than the sum of their parts. Such image constellations are singular in its character. For the first time at the Museum of Photography, this enthralling phenomenon becomes the theme of an exhibition: "A Photo Rarely Comes Alone."

Three main chapters – Faces and bodies, Architectures, and Experiments – provide an opportunity for new discoveries and re-encounters with major 20th and 21st century photoartists, among them Otto Steinert, Boris Mikhailov, Francesca Woodman, Barbara Klemm, Man Ray, and Anna and Bernhard Blume. The spectrum of the pairs, cycles, and series on display extends from portraits of film stars, promotional photographs, and reportage all the way to collages, microphotographs, and photograms.

All of the works on view are drawn from the abundant Collection of Photography of the Kunstbibliothek, which has run the Museum of Photography in collaboration with the Helmut Newton Foundation since 2004. Over the past 150 years, the Kunstbibliothek has collected works of photo art and documents of the history of photography. Especially impressive are the acquisitions from the past 25 years, in particular generous gifts from our patrons, from the photographers and from the Association of Friends of the Museum of Photography.

Ein Foto kommt selten allein
Paare, Reihen, Serien aus der Sammlung Fotografie der Kunstbibliothek

Ausstellung: 12. Februar bis 5. Juni 2016
Eröffnung: 11. Februar, 19 Uhr
