Making Faces - The Death of the Portrait

If the body was the principal concern of photographers at the end of the 20th century, interest has now shifted to the face. And just as the genre of the body pushed aside the more narrow, tradition-bound concept of the nude, the genre of face photography is fast displacing that of the time-honored portrait. The new generation of photographers rejects the fundamental tenets of the portrait. They can neither accept that a portrait meaningfully summarizes the complexity of a human being, nor that a portrait can reveal the inner essence of a human being—the 'soul’.
