Greek Photographs of the 20th century
Ioannis Lambrou, Souvenir

The exhibition Greek Photographs of the 20th Century consists of works created within the time span of that wondrous as well as horrific century and on the eve of the 21st. All of them belong to the Museum’s permanent collection. They are works by Greek artists or by artists of Greek origin who have either worked in Greece, or whose work brings forward other, metaphorical aspects of contemporary Greek identity. With one significant exception: Swiss-born Fred Boissonnas, who during the first three decades of the 20th c. worked intensively and methodically on depicting Greece by means of thousands of photographic plates, becoming thus the most influential photographer in Greece during the midwar period. His work is included in this exhibition as a tribute to his rich activity and to his significant contribution to Greek photography.

The exhibition is an anthology of works that aims to highlight, elliptically and metaphorically, the country's portrait through 20th century photography. Furthermore it aims to set a concise outline of the evolution of greek photography through the work of more or less renowned artists.
