Carrie Mae Weems

P·P·O·W is pleased to announce two exhibitions of new work by CARRIE MAE WEEMS. In Chelsea we will present a film project entitled Coming Up For Air (a work in progress) and in Soho, a selection of photographs from several new bodies of work from 1997 until the present entitled A Little Bit of This and A Little Bit of That. These works attempt to demonstrate how private moments are inherently connected to the public arena.

Coming Up for Air is a series of short episodic films strung together in a non-linear fashion by a loose narrative about love, sex and social taboos. The film tracks how a relationship evolves and changes on an intimate level and through the lens of public perception. The film touches on great love affairs in history which were tragically altered by the politics of the time.

We will also present The Cuba Series and Mayflowers. The Cuba Series, a collection of gelatin silver prints, inspired by the history and people of Cuba, raises questions about the essence of social revolution. In Mayflowers, Weems photographs a group of young girls to discover the essence of innocence a time when the bounds of tradition take root.
