TOPOGRAPHY OF WAR
Curators: Jean-Yves Jouannais & Diane Dufour
17th September – 18th December, 2011
To mark its first anniversary, LE BAL, an exhibition, publishing, reflection and pedagogy platform, dedicated to the different representations of reality, presents the exhibition Topography of war.
Can we imagine that anything other than battle could to represent war? The photographs and videos exhibited here deliberately ignore leave aside confrontation, bodies, collapse, injury, death. The exhibition brings together several bodies of work produced after 2000, which share a clear and explicit documentary ambition: to display war in a totally disembodied manner, focusing rather on the sites, the positions, the geological or built spaces. They are topographical essays that favor a reading of war through its geography, without denying the human cost of fighting.
In terms of military strategy, these iconographic choices coincide with the increased use of simulation techniques and the spread of long-range weaponry, but also with the military's media censorship and the virtual impossibility for photographers and video-makers to operate freely on the ground.
Has the territory of war become an abstract concept, an ideological construction, a given that cannot be represented?
