“. . . Photographer of the decisive moment”

dimitri soulas“. . . Photographer of the decisive moment” (Leo Fritz Gruber, Founder & Director of Photokina / Cologne, Germany)Dimitris Soulas is a Greek former photographer, with many distinctions and positive reviews, who worked as a photojournalist in Munich for the short period of seven years, 1967 to 1974 (during the dictatorship in Greece). Previous to, and following that period, he worked as a Marketer, which was his speciality. His photographs were published by the Associated Press (AP) agency, "Magnum", as well as several magazines such as "STERN", Paris Match, Epoca, etc.Forty years after his successful albeit short career as a photographer, Soulas was “rediscovered” by the Director of the Museum of Photography in Munich, Dr. Ulrich Pohlmann, who in 2008 organized a major exhibition, of his work. This exhibition was presented in many major cities including Munich, Athens and New York.Photographs by Dimitris Soulas can be viewed in the following address: www.dimitri-soulas.comReviews on dimitris soulas (from 1970 to 2010)«…Dimitris Soulas has an irrefutable sense for detecting those little events of everyday life through which man appears naked and helpless towards his fate. His ability to capture human vibrations, to be aware and experience them, is what urges him to press his camera’s button at the exact tenth of a second in which the human element overshadows any other existing striking aspect of events…»Leo Fritz Gruber, Founder an Director of Photokina / Cologne, Germany,(Fotomagazin / Germany, 11/1970)«…Following the fall of the Greek dictatorship in 1974, Dimitris Soulas returned to Greece. He had had enough of quick clicking and capturing the eternity of the second. Thus was lost a great photographer. Nevertheless his photos shall remain deeply imprinted in the visual memory of the 20th century…»Fritz Sperling, (PHOTOGRAPHY YEAR BOOK, England, 1975)«…The difference between a good and a brilliant photographer is difficult to describe. Someone may discover by observing photos taken by Dimitris Soulas during the late sixties and early seventies, that shooting the right theme at the right moment is not enough. From this exact right moment he must select the fraction of a second that makes a good photo magnificent…»Andrian Kreye, (Süddeutsche Zeitung, München / Germany, 19./20.04.2008)«. . . It’s a great shame that this so talented photographer decided to put his camera aside, having worked as a photojournalist for only seven years. A genius photojournalist, Soulas possessed a sense of watchfulness, quick perception as well as critical awareness, but most of all an irrefutable intuition for correct timing down to the exact tenth of a second. He therefore possessed the best qualifications to practice a profession he entered in such an unusual way…»Brita Sachs, (Frankfurter Allgemeine, Frankfurt / Germany, 20.06.2008)
