Sterilemind Gallery
Profile
Located at 230 Mulberry Street, just a few steps South of Houston Street in the heart of NOLITA (North of Little Italy), Sterilemind opened its doors last November to those seeking the best in cutting edge photography from around the world. With a single gaze into the gallery from what CitySearch.com describes as "white-hot" NOLITA, it becomes clear that Curator Liesl Eisenbeiss' vision of creating a comfortable home for both art and artists has become reality. Formerly a dead zone between Little Italy and The East Village, NOLITA is home to many of the most vibrant shops, boutiques and galleries in Manhattan.
The Sterilemind Gallery seeks to expose the work of emerging photographers in a non-traditional gallery space designed to look and feel like a room in someone's home. Sterilemind's design is fluid and welcoming; it is a place where both artist and public will feel at home, able to relax as they gaze at the works of the featured artist in a calm corner of New York City. Unlike more conventional white wall galleries, Sterilemind is designed to remove the barriers from purchasing new work by making it easier to visualize the pieces at home. New shows will open every 6 weeks.
The gallery's name is a statement on the current state of art, especially as it pertains to emerging talent. Historically, urban centers have been cultural centers as well. However, during the past century, the widespread expansion of mega-cities has forced both artist and public to become extremely focused on financial and emotional survival. Less time is available today to create or explore new art than even five or ten years ago. Sterilemind is a tribute to the resiliency of the artist's creative drive to bring powerful new images into a potentially faceless, increasingly homogenous and ultimately "sterile" world. Sterilemind is a new home for a generation of important new emerging photographers whose vision continues to thrive.
